The Muni, as it's affectionately known, is a summer tradition in Springfield that dates back to 1950 when the outdoor amphitheatre first opened in a wheat field near the lake. This all-volunteer company puts on four popular musicals each season, drawing an audience of all ages. In 2009 they welcomed their one millionth patron. Because nearby parking is limited, a golf cart is available to shuttle people to and from the entrance. One can also be dropped off at the lower side gate with level entry to wheelchair seating. Sign language interpretation is provided the first Sunday of each production and assistive listening devices are available at the box office. The Muni is located on E. Lake Shore Drive 2.5 miles east of the I-55 Stevenson Drive exit.
