The Great Western Railroad Depot, located just blocks from the Lincoln Home, was the site of Abraham Lincoln's famous "Farewell Address: as he departed Springfield to Washington, DC, for his first inauguration in 1861. The brick building was completely restored in 2012 and belongs to a private family who maintains a law office in the mezzanine and second floors. There is a visitor center open to the public located on the first floor which is handicap accessible with access to a public restroom. The men's and women's waiting rooms on the ground floor display photo exhibits, railroad memorabilia and a screening area showing a 20-minute video of Lincoln's 12-day train trip to Washington, DC and a recreation of Lincoln's Farewell Address.
