The Great Western Railroad Depot, located just blocks from the Lincoln Home, was the site of Abraham Lincoln's famous "Farewell Address" as he departed to Washington, DC, for his first inauguration in 1861. The brick building, restored following a fire in 1968, belongs to the State Journal Register with visitor services provided by the National Park Service. There are men's and women's waiting rooms on the ground floor, photo exhibits on Lincoln's life on the mezzanine level, and a screening room showing an uncaptioned video on Lincoln's 12-day inauguration trip on the second floor. The depot, which has two steps at the entrance and no elevator, is not accessible for visitors using wheelchairs.
