The Illinois Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1993 when the Springfield Symphony Orchestra Association combined with the Bloomington Normal Symphony Society. The orchestra serves both communities, performing at multiple venues in each. In Springfield the orchestra plays primarily at the Sangamon Auditorium at the University of Illinois. There are also free outdoor performances at the Illinois State Fair and in Douglas Park where a "Pops in the Park" concert takes place each Labor Day weekend.
