This urban wildlife sanctuary, an oasis in the hustle and bustle of northeastern Springfield, was once a quiet farm in the country. Its vineyard and orchard, abandoned to nature since the 1930s, provide a woodland home for many birds and small mammals. Originally purchased in the 1860s, the farm was passed down to granddaughter Margery Adams who, at her death in 1983, willed the property to the Illinois Audubon Society. In addition to cutting trails and planted a prairie, the Society built their new state headquarters here, incorporating the 1850s farmhouse. While the education center is wheelchair accessible, the trails are suitable only for all-terrain chairs. Margery's Trail, a quarter-mile loop, has benches at regular intervals.
